Sony PCM-M10 first impressions

Andy Selfridge

As many of you know, over the last year I have been preaching the gospel of Zoom. I have been using my H2 faithfully as my workhorse audio recorder. Honestly, it is hard to find a better value than the H2 given the quality of audio and the many features available at it’s price point (if you go by features vs. price). I still think that the H2 is a much better choice than standard lower end voice recorders…(cont…)

Laser Grid Device…Initial Impressions

I first became aware of this device about a year ago. Shawn Robison from Twilight Paranormal (now RCPSKY) began using these devices on investigation well before they were popularized on television and I was fascinated with the idea every since I saw it on his website. What is the device you might ask? It is nothing more than a 5mw green laser pointer that has a beam splitter attached to the end to produce many beams in a symmetrical grid-like pattern. That’s it really, nothing more glamorous than that, but it’s possible applications for paranormal research are many. (cont…)

Is a DVR system a good fit for your group?
We are all familiar with the images of our favorite television ghost hunters unspooling large amounts of video cable and adjusting camera angles for their DVR (digital video recorder) system in preparation for an investigation. The deployment of DVR camera systems in the paranormal investigative community has become so widespread that I thought I would put together a short article detailing the advantages and pitfalls of these systems to help the reader determine if these systems fit their or their team’s needs.(cont…)

Primer for Introductory Infrared Photography and Paranormal Applications

Ghosts and spirits seem to occupy an unseen world that is all around us, interacting with our own at their leisure. What if we were able to see into that unseen world, even if only just a small portion? Would it reveal answers to these mysterious phenomenon or would it merely eliminate yet another small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum as a candidate for spirit observation?

High Quality Audio Recording on a Budget

Over the past year and a half we have seen the emergence of many high quality digital audio recorders. These recorders bearing brand names like Zoom, Marantz, Tascam, Edirol, Yamaha, and Olympus have all thrown their offerings into the arena with cheaper, high-end digital audio recorders. What makes these systems more valuable than regular, thirty-dollar voice recorders from your local retail store? Audio quality would be the short answer. These high-end audio recorders have much higher sample rates and lower audio noise floors than their cheaper voice recorder counterparts. Using both side-by-side often shows that the higher quality recorders can clearly identify benign sounds that take on an eerie evp-like quality on lesser recorders. (cont…)

Avoiding Buyer’s Remorse When Purchasing an Entry Level Thermal Imager

A lot of folks think that a thermal imager (and by owning one, emulating their onscreen ghost hunting heros) is the most sought-after and irreplaceable item in your equipment inventory. I will admit, prices for these imagers tend to relegate these purchases to only well-funded researchers with serious comittment to data collection. I have been guilty of this type of generalization in the past, lending serious researcher-credibility to those groups and individuals who were able to pony up the cash for such a large investment in their equipment inventory. Regardless of a thermal imager’s application in paranormal research, it does tend to be the perceived demarcation point between enthusiast and researcher, and it is a perception shared among clients and peers (an often lamented fact for those of us who are budget impaired).(Cont…)
